Tuskegee made history in 2016 defeating FAMU (20-17) in the inaugural 5th Quarter Classic Sonic Boom of the South Jackson State University Marching Band was dubbed The Sonic Boom of the South in 1971 by students in the band. In 1971, the majorettes abandoned their batons and became a dance team known as the "'Prancing J-Settes"'. In 1974, the band's theme, "Get Ready," an old Motown favorite was selected and three years after that, the "Tiger Run-On" was perfected. The "Tiger Run- On" is a fast, eye-catching shuffle that blends an adagio step with an up-tempo shuffle, then back to adagio — a "Sonic Boom" trademark that brings fans to their feet during halftime performances. Marching Crimson Pipers The Marching Crimson Piper band was established over 100 years ago, and features a history of excellent performances. The covered area that seats TU's band and students at home football games is known as "the shed", and this is where the Crimson Pipers get fans energized with their signature tune "Ball & Parlay". Tuskegee University Band is under the direction of John Q. Lennard, a native of Tuskegee, Alabama.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities celebrate a rich tradition known as the "5th Quarter", a post-game musical battle between marching bands. Thousands of spectators flock to HBCU football games solely for the precision drills, elaborate dance routines, and flashy drum majors. The face-off between marching bands mixed with college football fuels annual events known as "Classics". 5th Quarter Classic embodies what a Classic is all about as Tuskegee University Golden Tigers take on Jackson State University Tigers.

Jackson State is most famous for alumni NFL Hall of Famers Walter Payton, Lem Barney, Jackie Slater, and Jimmy Smith. Tuskegee has produced NFL greats Drayton Florence, Ricky Jones, Ken Woodard, and Dennis Norfleet. Tuskegee Golden Tigers have faced the Tigers of Jackson State University only three times. The teams have not met on the gridiron since 1993 when Jackson State won (24-12) to take the all time series lead 2 - 1.
